Flu is the first in a planned series of Decipher my data! projects, which allow students to become real scientists! Students will be working alongside leading scientists on genuine scientific studies to produce better results than either could achieve on their own.
The Flu study is lead by Dr Rob Aldridge and his team at the Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases Centre at University College London. They want to see if school absence due to illness data can provide an early warning system for spotting flu outbreaks. Over 100 schools across England and Wales are being invited to compare their illness absence data with national figures to help Dr Rob and his team develop a new method of Flu surveillance that will enable the NHS to better plan interventions in the future.
