Actual Illness

I think that from the absence data it is hard to tell which of the cases are actually relevant to the flu research, as some may be different illnesses or reasons for not being at school, such as family reasons. So therefore without knowing the exact reasons for the person to be off school, this should be taken into consideration when analysing the data

One Response to Actual Illness

  1. Dr Rob says:

Yes, I agree, although we are only collecting data on people taking time off school for illness, so anyone having to take time off for family reasons shouldn’t be contained within our data.

We don’t collect information on the reason for the illness absence, and lots of them won’t be due to flu. I’ve explained one of the ways I have tried to examine this in my lab log here – http://flu.deciphermydata.org.uk/2013/01/22/deciphering-the-data-influences-of-other-viruses-on-absence-levels/

Can you think of any other ways to investigate this problem?
